We hope you will have an opportunity to feature this unique project and its associated events!
The PRIDE Center, under the direction of Terry Fleming, is putting on one of the most unique fund-raising events in Gainesville - bringing together members of the art community and PRIDE.
Called "Artists Supporting PRIDE: Rainbow Spirits", this event has twenty-two volunteer artists in our community who will paint, decorate, and/or dress twenty-two different full-size mannequins turning them into unique works of art. These "Rainbow Spirits" will be presented and auctioned to the public to raise money to help make this year's PRIDE the best yet.
Working in conjunction with artist's Tom Miller and Brian Wilson, who both will help coordinate the project, this event seeks to bring together the PRIDE and arts community in the service of a greater cause.
---------------------------
DETAILS: These mannequins were obtained from Macy's going-out-of-business sale. Terry Fleming had the idea to put these mannequins with local artists to turn them into works of art representing the diversity of the PRIDE and the arts community in Gainesville, Florida. He phoned Tom Miller and shared that the idea came to him in a dream-like EUREKA! moment. Miller, a local performance artist and painter instantly took up the cause. "This is a brilliant concept and a great way for artists who support PRIDE to help." He called artist Brian Wilson who organizes arts festivals to advise and help put artists together with their "Rainbow Spirits".
There are two events which highlight this project:
EVENT #1. On Sunday June 3rd at the HighDive (210 SW 2nd Ave.) at 8pm, a free and open to the public event will occur at 8pm. The public can meet the artists and members of the PRIDE community. At this event, we will see all twenty-two mannequins BEFORE they are turned into fabulous works of art. This is the event where the artists will 'adopt' their mannequin. There will be food, a cash bar, music, entertainment, and recognition of each artist and their unique "Rainbow Spirit". This event is free and open to the public.
The artists will have three weeks to work with their "Rainbow Spirits" and turn them into works of art.
EVENT #2. On Saturday, July 21st 2018 at 8pm, the PRIDE Center (3131 NW 13th St, Gainesville) will hold an event - also with food, drink, music, entertainment - and the public will be able to see the finished works of art and bid to own them. All the funds raised go to the PRIDE Community Center to fund PRIDE 2018! Local business can also choose to support an artist with a contribution and take ownership of the finished piece.
