ITEM: Gainesville Performance Artist, Tom Miller has successfully completed Phase (1) of his 7 year performance art piece, "Professor Miller".
DETAILS: In early 2011, Tom Miller announced his longest performance art piece, "Professor Miller". In this interactive endurance reality performance, Miller began a late-term career in academics by enrolling in the fine arts program at Santa Fe College. His goal: (1) To attend Santa Fe and earn an AA Degree in Theatre. (2) To transfer into the University of Florida School of Fine Arts and earn a Bachelor degree in Theatre. (3) To transfer to Dyson College of Arts and Sciences (The Actor's Studio) in NYC and earn a PhD. (4) Upon receiving the PhD, to immediately abandon academics and return to what he was doing before, which was Theatre.
Mr. Miller has announced completion of Phase (1). He has received an Associate of Arts in Fine Arts from Santa Fe College. He graduate with a 3.9 GPA (at the age of 47) and during his 2.5 year term, won an acting award for every college production he was in, was invited to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa (which he is, in good standing), was awarded two terms of full-ride scholarship, was twice named to the Dean's List, and learned American Sign Language. Mr. Miller has been accepted to the University of Florida and will be attending the Fall term beginning August 21 of 2013.

"I want to show that it's never too late to get a degree and then quit college," Miller said. "I think it's important for people to know that professors can get careers which offer them absolutely no real-world possibilities, and also that Philosophy isn't the least viable degree." Miller also emphasized that he hoped to inspire people who have given up on academic possibilities. "They give you so much money in this deal, and all you have to do is show up and try. If you can stay in school for years and then die before you have to pay back the loans, who's better than you? America has my back!"
